2018 Reading Wrap Up

It is nearly 2019, I have set out my goals for the upcoming year. As such, all that remains is the reflect on the year that has just passed. I am starting here with a general wrap up for 2018, with a final post to follow listing some of my favourite and least liked booked this year.

You can find our more about any of the books I read this year over at my Goodreads account.

In 2018 I read 62 books, which was 17 more than my target of 45 books (138%). This is double the number of books I read in 2016 (31 of 36), so whilst I feel there are a lot of books I haven’t gotten to, it shows I am still fully getting back out of my reading slump. In 2017, I read 139% of my 36 book target (50 books).

Although I going to set my target at 52 books, I would like to either read more books in 2019, or read longer books. My average book length was only 285 pages this year, which is a drop on both 2016 & 2017. I do read graphic novels and I also read quite a few short books early in 2018. I have quite a few novels on my TBR in 2019, so it is likely my average page length will increase in 2019.

My average rating 3.7 stars. This is lower than previous years (3.9 in 2016, 4.0 in 2017) – I am trying to be more critical with my star ratings. Goodreads doesn’t allow for half star ratings which means I personally tend to round up my star rating making my year seem more highly rated than it was.

Therefore my true star ratings should be:

I did attempt to take part in the Read Harder Challenge in 2018, by Book Riot. Out of the 24 challenges, I did pretty badly and only complete 6. These were:

  • A comic written and illustrated by the same person,
  • A comic written or illustrated by a person of colour,
  • A one-sitting book,
  • The first book in a new-to-you YA or middle grade series,
  • A sci fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author,
  • A book of genre fiction in translation.

I have decided not to undertake the challenge again in 2019, as whilst I believe reading diversely is important, this year I am aiming to tackle more of my TBR which generally do not match the challenges set.

How did your reading go in 2018? Did you set a reading goal or take part in any challenges?

I read a little over 40 books, so I’m pretty happy with my overall statistics. I wish Goodreads had half star ratings, though!

    1. 40 books is amazing! And yes, it is probably one of my only major criticism with Goodreads.
